Ethan Hawke's breakthrough role came at age 18 in Peter Weir's Dead Poet's Society in 1988, and the earnest, scruffy-faced actor quickly became the slacker generation's poster boy, thanks to additional films like Reality Bites and Before Sunrise. Most of the 20 movies he made in some 15 years were more romantic, thoughtful films (Great Expectations, Snow Falling on Cedars, Before Sunset), until what he calls his first "boy" movie, Training Day, which earned him an Oscar nod.
