1-MINUTE RESUME FOR CLINT EASTWOOD

The Man With No Name but with two facial expressions (grim and grimmer) started out a B-movie actor who became an A-list superstar with his TV role on Rawhide, the spaghetti westerns he did with Sergio Leone in the 1960s and the Dirty Harry movies of the '70s and '80s. Though he continued to act mainly in cop and cowboy flicks, he expanded his career to move behind the camera, directing some of his most popular movies: Play Misty for Me, The Outlaw Josey Wales and Unforgiven. With a career spanning four decades, Eastwood became one of film's most prolific, versatile artists, an idol of both fans and those hoping to make their own careers in the industry. Always tight-lipped and low-key, he retired as an actor without telling anyone sometime before making Million Dollar Baby: "I was in retirement," he told director Paul Haggis as his reason for refusing a role in a Haggis film. "I came out of it to do Million Dollar Baby. I don't think I can go out better, do you?" However, he continues to direct.

5 Things:

1. John Wayne wrote him a letter chewing him out for his take on settlers and pioneers in High Plains Drifter, which remains one of the actor-director's favorite films.
2. He has called himself a Libertarian.
3. His name is an anagram for "old west action."
4. Eastwood was slated to play villain Two-Face in the Batman series until it was canceled in 1966.
5. He once earned a living playing honky-tonk piano and is such a devoted jazz buff that he launched his own label, Malpaso Records.

Quote:

"A lot of times, people are disappointed when I don't act like the characters I play. They're disappointed when I don't come at them with 'Make my day!'"
