Name: Anthony Hopkins

Birth Name: Philip Anthony Hopkins

Birthdate: December 13, 1937

Birthplace: Margam, Wales
1-MINUTE RESUME FOR ANTHONY HOPKINS

Known for his almost obsessive preparation for his roles and ability to mimic almost any accent, Anthony Hopkins was successful on stage and in British productions for many years before hitting it big in America. In 1991, he became a household name — and an Oscar winner — thanks to his sinister turn as serial killer Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs (a character he would reprise twice). Other roles of note include his hammy Professor Van Helsing in Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula, the repressed butler in Merchant/Ivory's The Remains of the Day, President John Quincy Adams in Steven Spieberg's Amistad, and the original Zorro in The Mask Of Zorro. In 1993, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

5 Things:

1. He ruined his relationship with his idol, Sir Laurence Olivier, when he walked off stage in the middle of a National Theatre production of Hamlet.
2. His third wife is an antiques dealer 19 years his junior.
3. Being a poor student in school is one reason he became an actor.
4. His mother is a distant relative to the poet William Butler Yeats.
5. He is a recovered alcoholic (kicked the habit in 1975).

Quote:

"The Welsh people have a talent for acting that one does not find in the English. The English lack heart."
