1-MINUTE RESUME FOR SAMANTHA MORTON

Though she's been acting onscreen since she was 13-years-old, American audiences have only had English actress Samantha Morton on their radar since about 1999 (1998, if you saw her small indie Dreaming of Joseph Lees) when she starred as an abused mute woman in Woody Allen's Sweet and Lowdown. Steven Spielberg cast her as the clairvoyant in 2002's Minority Report, her biggest-budget debut to date. That same year, she completed In America, which earned her a Best Actress nod from the Academy Awards in 2004.

5 Things:

1. She has eight siblings.
2. Her parents divorced when she was 13, after her father started sleeping with the teenage neighbor (she got pregnant, and they got married); Samantha entered a series of foster homes shortly after.
3. She is known for being blunt and outspoken.
4 She wore a Sex Pistols t-shirt underneath a suit to the 2004 Oscars.
5. Her biological mother overdosed (but lived) after Samantha delivered a tell-all interview in The Guardian, and it caused London tabloids to descend upon her hometown and pressure the family for more gossip.

Quote:

"It's like sometimes in life you choose the easy path, and it turns out that it's got more potholes than the bumpy one, which would have been really nice with lots of flowers on either side of the road."
— London's The Independent, May 28, 2000

Family:

Daughter: Esme, born Feb. 5, 2000 (father: Charlie Creed-Miles)

Awards:

2004: Academy Award nomination: Best Actress, In America

2000: Academy Award nomination: Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Sweet and Lowdown; Golden Globe nomination: Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, Sweet and Lowdown
