1-MINUTE RESUME FOR MERYL STREEP
It sure would be great to have a little anecdote here about how Streep
was discovered in a deli and went on to unlikely Oscar fame. Truth is,
she's been busting her butt since she first fell for acting as a
student at Vassar. After graduation, she enrolled in the Yale School of
Drama — Jodie Foster was a classmate — and quickly landed film work.
Her first role in 1977's
Julia earned raves and led to her being cast in
The Deer Hunter the following year. Two roles is all it took — Streep took home her first Oscar for
Deer Hunter
and the rest is history. She became a master at accents, played
dramatic, comedic and heroic rolls with equal aplomb, earning 13
Academy Award nominations. She's won twice (the other for 1982's
Sophie's Choice) and is now considered one of the greatest (if not
the greatest) living film actresses.
5 Things:
1. Dedicated to a fault, Streep spent months learning to play the violin for her role as a master violinist in Music of the Heart.
2. Streep is afraid of helicopters.
3. Before the world discovered her talent, Streep worked as a waitress at The Hotel Somerset in New Jersey.
4. She was a cheerleader and homecoming queen in high school.
5. She was named an Officer of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2000.

On how she stays grounded: "You can't get spoiled if you do your own ironing."
