1-MINUTE RESUME FOR EMMA THOMPSON
Born into a family of actors, Thompson graduated from Cambridge
University with a degree in English Literature before pursuing a career
in entertainment. She found work in radio, television and theater
before she won her first major film role in the romantic comedy
The Tall Guy in 1989. Though witty by nature, she received her first Oscar for Best Actress for her dramatic turn in
Howard's End (1992) before going on to win another one, this time for writing, in 1996 for Best Adapted Screenplay for Jane Austen's
Sense and Sensibility
(she also played the Oscar-nominated lead actress role). An actor of
great humor and versatility, Thompson is also known for her work in
Dead Again (1991),
In the Name of the Father (1993),
The Remains of the Day (1993) and, most recently, the role of Sybill Trelawney in the
Harry Potter films.
5 Things:
1. She spent part of her life in Scotland and has stated that she "feels Scottish."
2. She was originally slated to play the role of God in Kevin Smith's Dogma (1999) but was unable to perform due to her pregnancy.
3. She speaks French and Spanish fluently.
4. She is one of only ten actors who have been nominated for both a
Supporting and Lead Acting Academy Award in the same year for
achievements in two different movies and is the only person to have won
Academy awards for both acting and writing.
5. She accepted the role of Professor Trelawney in the Harry Potter films to impress her daughter.
Quote:
On Sharon Stone's performance in
Basic Instinct

Michael Douglas like a donkey, and not an inch moved. If that had been
me, there would have been things flying around hitting me in the eye."
