Birthplace: Beaumont, France
1-MINUTE RESUME FOR AUDREY TAUTOU

She appeared in a dozen small films in her native France before gaining U.S. attention with Amélie. She had starred in 2000's The Libertine, a movie she calls "vulgar" and has since said she did because she needed the experience and the money. After that, she starred in a French film called Venus Beauty, the poster for which caught the attention of Amélie director Jean-Pierre Jeunet. His film's star, Emily Watson, had just dropped out, and Jeunet was so captivated by the poster that he replaced Watson with Tautou and thus launched her Stateside career. She had a role in the acclaimed indie Dirty Pretty Things, and her next major film was the hotly anticipated The Da Vinci Code, opposite Tom Hanks.

5 Things:

1. She takes pictures of reporters who interview her and keeps a scrapbook of them.
2. She had three weeks to improve her lackluster English for Dirty Pretty Things, topping it off with a Turkish accent.
3. Her role in Amélie was originally created for Emily Watson.
4. As a youngster, she wanted to be a primatologist but couldn't figure out how to get into the field. So instead, she tried acting.
5. The band Brand New has song named after her.

Quote:

"It's tough for French actresses to make it in Hollywood. Think of [Emmanuelle] Béart in Mission: Impossible — what a waste of time. I wouldn't mind being in an American film for a laugh, but I certainly don't want to be in Thingy Blah Blah 3, if you know what I mean."
The Guardian, Oct. 2, 2002
